The eighth suspect arrested in connection with the disappearance and rape of a mentally disabled Soweto teenager will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court this morning. The 37-year old man was arrested on Wednesday at his home in Braamfischerville where the victim was also discovered after missing for three weeks.
Seven suspects, including two minors, have been arrested and appeared in court yesterday in connection with the incident. The matter was brought to light after video footage of the incident went viral on the Internet. The case has drawn massive interest, with the story even making headlines abroad. Yesterday the seven suspects appeared in court and their case was postponed to next Wednesday.
Cabinet has now expressed shock at the incident, condemning the barbaric act
The police's Tshisikhawe Ndou says more arrests are imminent, further confirming that the 37-year old suspect will be charged with abduction and rape. As reactions to the gang rape continue to pour in, Cabinet has now expressed shock at the incident, condemning the barbaric act.
Government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said cabinet condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the barbaric act committed to the 17-year old Soweto girl. He's called on police to ensure that the full might of the law is implemented. The case against the seven suspects accused of raping the girl has meanwhile been postponed to April 25. Preliminary charges have been formulated against the suspects in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court.
